Negril vacations are quietly becoming the epitome of Jamaican tourism. Montego Bay is still known as the tourist capital of Jamaica, but it’s pretty obvious that Negril is getting closer to both Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Just 30 years ago it was nothing more than a mosquito-infested campsite with no major developments. In fact, the people who used to vacation there were hippies, who accepted the lack of uniformity and open space that Negril offered.

Jamaica and Negril in particular were conducive to the hippie lifestyle. Not only could they relate to the freedom that Jamaica provides, but many aspects of Rastafarian beliefs were also part of their way of life. There is a subculture in Jamaica that appreciates nature, freedom and a counter cultural attitude.

Perhaps the laid-back attitude that Negril is now known for was born out of that culture. Although it’s a place for all with newly built resorts, the rustic West End still represents the easy way to vacation, it’s an intimate place to vacation. It’s really a fun place and it’s hard for someone to get bored while on vacation here. The world famous 7-mile white sand beach and the highly celebrated Rick’s Cafe, known for its cliff jumping, are breathtaking. In general, Negril is primarily a tourist destination, so all businesses are geared towards making visitors as comfortable and happy as possible. If I had to choose where to spend my Caribbean vacation, it would definitely be Negril.
