Today, double-glazed windows are mainly used for new construction or as a replacement, as they offer a much better thermal barrier compared to single-pane windows. The core of this double glazing is the IGU (Insulating Glass Unit). The basic GUI has air filling the space between the sealed panels while the more sophisticated GUI comes with inert gas filling the space. The inert gas provides improved insulation, which reduces heat loss, making these windows much more energy efficient than basic IGU windows.

What causes glass windows to fog up?

Fog sometimes builds up inside double-glazed panels, not only reducing visibility but also making the window look unsightly. Mist can come and go and is a sure sign of bad seals. Over time, the seals around the edges of the glass unit begin to deteriorate due to a number of factors including sunlight, water exposure, wind loads, workloads, etc. All of this causes inert gas inside the space between the panels to escape while outside moisture fills the space. Infiltrated moisture condenses and forms fog when temperatures inside and outside the home are extreme. The fog that forms between the glass panes affects the energy efficiency of the window, which increases heating bills.

Solutions for fogged glass

Until recently, you either lived with your fogged up glasses or opted for a complete double glazing replacement. Replacement involves changing the insulating glass unit together with the frame around the glass or replacing only the IGU panel within the sash frame. However, the process is more economical compared to having to repair the entire window, as it requires less labor and fewer parts on the job. These IGU panels are available with a warranty for a limited period.

The demisting procedure

There is a cheaper technique for repairing fogged glass windows called the defogging procedure. This low cost solution involves drilling a hole in the glass to remove moisture between the glass panes and then sealing it perfectly to prevent outside moisture from infiltrating the GUI. The cost to defog is about half the cost of replacing an entire GUI. This is a cosmetic upgrade and the window looks better without the fog inside the panes. However, inert gas within the panels is not replaced nor is the thermal efficiency of the window restored.

Although there are DIY tutorials available to get rid of fog on double glazing, these tutorials are not that helpful and there is a good chance that the job will be botched. It will be a wise decision to hire the services of professional companies since they have the right tools and equipment to work safely. Experienced glaciers are not only able to complete the job faster, but the result will enhance the beauty of the property.
