To have a successful airsoft skirmish, you need to do some pre-planning for the event. The first thing you will have to decide is what type of airsoft skirmish you are going to have. In this article we will look at the two most popular types of airsoft games, head-to-head combat and objective games.
Head-to-head style combat scenarios
A head-to-head competition basically consists of two teams doing their best to eliminate each other. In one type of objective game it is similar to the “capture the flag” type of game that requires your squad to complete a mission or task. In head-to-head style games, the most common number of teams is two facing each other. The goal is to eliminate the other team first in various scenarios.
Some examples of head-to-head style games are as follows:
1. Patrol Mission – This will have a team patrolling through an area trying to find the other team. This is very similar to the search and destroy missions run by the army and you will need good tracking skills and group mobility. There is usually an area that will be tagged as enemy territory and for added realism you can add booby traps like mines and claymore airsoft grenades. The best place to play these types of games is a wooded area. Although urban combat areas are gaining popularity and lend themselves well to squad-based games. The military refer to this as MOUT (Military Operation in Urban Terrain). The only real difference is that in urban combat you are in towns and cities, often built specifically for airsoft games.
2. Frontline Combat – Just like the real wars of yesteryear, this is the best head-to-head. In this scenario, each team will control a part of the battlefield. The goal is for one airsoft team to attack the other and try to outflank them to overtake their position and win the airsoft game. Objective mission style In the objective airsoft combat style you will have an objective to complete, the other team will try to prevent you from completing this objective. In most cases, these events are timed because they require exceptional team interaction and communication.
Some examples of target style are:
1. Rescue hostages: this type of mission usually takes place in closer locations. This type of game is when a team is trying to locate the hostage and successfully free him, killing his captors. The opposing team will try to prevent the hostage from being released. In this type of game, one team will defend their firebase from the other team trying to steal their flag. This is by far the most popular type of airsoft game right now.
2. Downed Pilot – A simulated pilot or other valuable target is hiding somewhere on the battlefield and opposing teams try to find it first. One team plays with the rescuers and the other with the enemy trying to eliminate the target. This is a great game where both teams move fast trying to find the target and all sorts of skirmishes often break out during the hunt.
Other Airsoft Battle Scenarios and Ideas
1. Recreations: many people like to plan their airsoft games around actual events or battles. For example, raid and rescue in the prisoner of war camp. One part of the camp will be the prisoner of war camp, the good guys need to capture the camp and save the prisoners. The baddies’ job is to hold their camp and kill or capture the rescue team. You can choose any theme or time period you want, such as Vietnam, WWII, or even the Iraq War. Although it will require a bit of research, in the end it will be a lot more fun and add a lot of realism.
Many teams really get involved and wear authentic uniforms and have weapons appropriate for the time period. People have also had great success recreating their favorite war movie scene. Again, hostage rescue or even the capture of a bridge or enclosure have been used in movies and should be easy to recreate. Your imagination is your only limit and if you really try and think of new ideas, you will have more fun! It really comes down to the more realistic the battle, the more fun everyone will have!
2. Use of Accessories: Battle accessories are another great way to increase the fun in your airsoft skirmishes. Typically items will be marked before the game starts and each will represent a certain type of item. These props can be branded as whatever you want and if captured they can be used for extra points, bringing back a downed teammate, or whatever you want.
If you are the one who is supposed to plan the battles for your club, you can see that your options are limitless and that good planning can take a fair amount of time. It will pay off to be as creative and detailed as possible, but don’t make it complicated or people will get confused and the fun factor will diminish. Your reward in your detailed planning will be when everyone is having fun and really engaging in the battle themes you have presented to them!
