This article advocates going back to basics as a leadership training topic. Why go back to basics? Sometimes we stray from what matters most and get sidetracked. Consequently, momentum is lost. Going back to basics, however, accentuates the core. You are challenged to review and acknowledge what matters most.

In detail, the relevance of the theme in various settings is discussed along with strategies for employing it. You’ll surely walk away with new ideas on how to use a common but noteworthy theme.

Back to basics in education

What a fitting topic for school leaders. Although we have advanced technologically, we have produced a generation of young people who lack critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They have been trained to push buttons and use calculators.

When I was young, my teachers hammered math and reading. They taught reading lessons on subjects like science or social studies. By the way, we did math exercises on the blackboard, without calculators. The girls competed against the boys.

Equally important, vocational education deserves more attention. The reality is that not all kids go to college. Despite the urgency to guide young people in this direction, it is a wrong step. The trades, however, equip young people with valuable skills that demand pay that often exceeds what a college graduate earns.

Along with the trades, school leaders must increase business-oriented programs. It stirs the creative juices of youth. Untapped potential will spill over into thriving businesses. As a country, we have moved away from what made us great: inventing, building businesses, producing.

Back to basics in the family

On the contrary, families have lost their way. In many cases, the blind are leading the blind. As family leaders, parents benefit from going back to basics. Well, what are the basic elements in a family? What about respect, love, discipline, responsibility, faith, and self-control, to name a few?

Parents are raising future leaders. What they deposit in the youth is what will come out. Help them give kids the right things (values, a sense of responsibility, a work ethic, respect for themselves and others), not just material things that lose value.

Back to the basics of religion

It is paramount that the church go back to basics. A concerted effort must be made to return to the teachings of Jesus and reach the lost. In short, the impetus should be the BIBLE Although the Word directs us to take the message to the ends of the earth, I believe we should take it next door, down the street, and around the corner.

Back to basics in the workplace

As mentioned above, the workplace is central to Back to Basics leadership training. It will revive people and organizations. Leaders in many cases have lowered their standards and expectations. As a result, mediocrity has flourished.

Even getting workers to respect each other has fallen by the wayside. For example, a woman was in her office and a coworker was playing loud music and causing a disruption. The first requested that her supervisor ask the person to turn down the music volume. Instead, the supervisor told the complainant to close the door.

Going back to basics in government

Ultimately, the government has a lot to gain by going back to basics. Sometimes I think our leaders have lost their way. What happened to teamwork? It seems that more time is spent fighting and attacking. By the way, it sets a tone for the country. And, a divided country cannot be sustained.
