There are many materials on the Internet that provide information about generations (Baby Boomers, X, Millennials, etc.) and, more importantly, how their work habits differ. However, not much is known about the youngest of them: the so-called Generation Z (later labeled as Z’ers). The first children representing this generation are born in 1996 and it is still debatable when this generation ends. In general, most people agree on the year 2014. It is important to shed some light on the subject because only in a few years will they be the most important workforce in the market.

Major events like the financial crisis and terrorist attacks have left their marks on people born after 1996. Perhaps the biggest difference between them and Millennials is that Z’ers are less optimistic about the future compared to their ancestors. The insecurity they feel is due to the lack of financial and political stability. Despite this, an interesting trend is observed. Fewer students than ever are working during the summer break. Probably a possible explanation for this phenomenon is the fact that their parents (Generation X and Y) earn more money compared to previous generations. Also, employers need to pay attention to the fact that salary alone is not a motivator for Gen Z. It is far more important to have a job that makes the world a better place. They like to participate in social activities such as helping to solve environmental problems, fighting world hunger, rescuing animals, etc. It is of great importance to know that the culture and goals of an organization make a big difference when representatives of Generation Z are looking for a job. They will undoubtedly prefer a lower paid job in a company with a social conscience rather than a higher paid workplace with no social conscience.

When it comes to technology, Generation Z is the first generation that has no memories of a world without the Internet and social media. Quick access to any type of information and communication via the Internet is a given, it is not a luxury for Z’ers. More than 70% of the children that are part of this generation have smartphones and computers. That’s why they spend most of their daily lives on social media, texting their peers and following celebrities. The main characteristic of these young people is their tolerance towards difference. This means that they are open-minded and can work and live with everyone, regardless of their gender, origin or religious beliefs. Prejudice is not common among Z’ers mainly because Internet communication allows them to meet people from all over the world.

Representatives of Generation Z are believed to be great entrepreneurs. This belief is mainly based on their high education which makes them complex workers. Much of their skills are acquired thanks to the technologies they use since childhood. Old school education is not something to be trusted. For example, they seem to dislike teachers who simply present them with information that is easily accessible on the web. A good knowledge of technologies and an understanding of how they really work can help Z’ers run their own business one day in terms of advertising and presenting a product to the right audience. His job is not just work. Employers need to create meaningful workplaces that deliver excitement, satisfaction, and visible results. As employees, Z’ers have many requirements, so companies must meet their expectations if they want to earn them. Things like social engagement, open-mindedness, and tolerance are of great importance to Gen Z. And finally, one thing this generation is really good at: multitasking. You can really trust your reps when it comes to multitasking.
