Miami, Florida, is sandwiched between the alligator-infested Florida Everglades in the east and exotic bikini-clad models on the Atlantic coast to the west. Not a bad place for a vacation spot. The city is not far from Orlando theme park attractions and the quieter, more relaxed city of Ft. Lauderdale. Perhaps best known for its colorful nightclubs and Latin American flair (the city is known as the gateway to South America), there are plenty of interesting, location- and culture-specific things to do while visiting the area.

The Technicolor that is Miami. From the crowds to the vibrant colors to the party but strict clubs, there is a certain Technicolor and flair in the city that sets it apart. Nowhere is this more evident than on Collins Avenue in South Beach. South Beach has several high-end resorts, restaurants and bars scattered throughout the city – imagine New York with constant sunshine and a good perennial vibe.

Don’t forget the stores. Where there are expensive restaurants and high-end hotels, there is shopping. And South Beach keeps happening. All the big brands are represented, but try searching the smaller local stores for truly authentic items specific to the culture and area. Plus, your support of these family-run stores will help cancel the Wal-Mart effect of homogenizing the world, one store at a time.

Deering Estate. This relic takes visitors back in time, to a time when life was simpler. It’s a great way to balance your high-flying South Beach experience. More than a part of South American history, Charles Deering also unearthed some prehistoric animals and the evidence is in place. Bring the kids and your camera, and prepare for a mini time warp in Miami!

Joe’s stone crab. OK. I rarely mention a particular supplier in any area, but Joe’s Stone Crab captures the spirit that is Miami. A true tourist destination, the place is packed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But the reason is the good food, the atmosphere, the history, and the fact that you are eating stone crab in Miami!

Miami Seaquarium Aquarium. A great place to spend the morning after spending the night out. Stroll lazily among the sea creatures and discover what lies beyond the white sands of South Beach. And this is not a place just for kids (although they will love them), but a great place to bring an appointment, get informed, or just spend a few hours waiting for the dinner cafe to reopen.

Deep Sea Fishing: OK, this isn’t exactly in the city proper, but it’s part of Miami and it needs to be done. Hop aboard a boat and get lucky fishing for sailfish, shark, snapper, tuna, and kingfish. Enjoy your meal!

Gator Park. Remember how close Miami is to the real Everglades? Well, Gator Park is a closer and easier way to take a look at the huge state park. Hop on an airboat with one of the unique and very local guides and get up close not only with the surroundings, but also with the alligators that frequent it.

The list of things to do in Miami could go on and on. We have selected just a few things here. Why 7? You rarely see top 7 lists and since Miami is so unique, well why buck the trend? Plus, starting with these 7 will keep you busy for at least 7 days; If your trip gives you more time, put on your sunglasses and see where the end of Collin’s Avenue takes you.
