Exfoliation involves using a body scrub to remove dead skin cells that make your skin look rough, wrinkled, dry, and patchy.

How to use scrubs to exfoliate skin (instructions)

  1. Select a scrub that includes healthy ingredients

  2. Bathe or shower first (yes, you can use soap before applying the scrub).

  3. Then after a bath or shower, start the exfoliation process.

  4. Make sure your entire body where the scrub is applied is wet with water.

  5. Get out of the water to apply the scrub. Be careful not to slip, body scrubs contain oil and are slippery. (A non-slip surface is needed when entering and exiting the shower or bath.)

  6. Take two tablespoons of the scrub and rub it into your skin in circular motions. It should feel good for your skin and not cause pain. Use the same pressure that you would use to apply lotion to a baby’s body. Keep it smooth.

  7. After rubbing the scrub all over your skin, step into the water and gently rinse the scrub leaving the oil behind. Note: Only a high-quality body scrub leaves an oil that really sticks to the skin. Do not use a washcloth, just your hands while cleaning the scrub (salt).

  8. After lifting all the sand (from the salt) from the body, turn off the water.

  9. Dry the body with a towel; do not rub the skin. You want to let the oils soak into your skin.

  10. Enjoy your new skin!

  11. Repeat the process twice a week for smooth, exfoliated skin.

How does the scrub benefit your skin?

  1. Unclogs pores by removing dirt and grime

  2. Rejuvenates the skin by repairing it

  3. Slows down the “skin aging” process

  4. It makes your skin better able to retain moisture by removing dead skin cells that lock in moisture.

  5. Softens the skin

  6. Promotes blemish-free skin

  7. Promotes the elasticity of the skin

Lastly, choose a scrub that includes healthy, natural ingredients that add nutrients and antioxidants to the skin. First, look at all the scrubs of interest and take a close look at the ingredients, size, cost, place of origin, and associated health benefits. When looking at a body scrub, review the ingredients and determine if those are the ingredients your skin needs. Search for ingredients and learn about the product’s ingredients, associated risks, and health benefits. The FDA is working diligently to keep consumers informed of the associated risks of some ingredients.
