Writing anything is not simply putting thoughts into words. Whether it’s a story, an article, or a sales letter, you need to capture the interest of your readers so they’ll keep reading. To deliver your message, you need to creatively grab your reader’s attention. The main ingredient in effective writing is creativity. While creativity may come naturally to some, others think they are not creative at all. Many get writer’s block and can’t seem to get their creativity going.

Effective writing creates images in the reader’s mind. The art of clear and crisp description requires a certain creative flair. The way an article is built sentence by sentence and then paragraph by paragraph into a whole requires creative inspiration. So what do you have to do when nothing comes to mind? There’s no secret trick to finding the perfect idea, but there are easy ways to get your creativity flowing. There are no guarantees, but these are tools that can help:

Carry a sketchbook or journal with you at all times.

Your senses are your radar. Ideas can be triggered by anything you hear, see, or smell. Write your ideas in a journal and keep it with you. You can also write down anything you have read or heard; Quotes, character sketches or other ideas can be used to develop your own and this is not stealing. Ideas and creativity can come from anywhere; it’s what you do with it that makes it yours.

Relax, don’t worry.

Clear your mind if you want to get your creativity going. Get rid of anything that might be an obstacle to your creativity. If you’re worried, you can’t focus on anything other than the source of the worry. Take some time to relax and think about your day. Your experiences are what shape your thoughts and your opinions that can be reflected in your writing. Self-Discovery: What makes you tick, what inspires you, what makes you angry, can be used to put you in a creative place.

Work in an inspiring place.

Your workplace can absorb your creativity if it doesn’t make you feel happy and relaxed. Your creativity comes from a good frame of mind, and a messy workplace that has distractions won’t help. Include objects that make you feel happy and relaxed. Images, aromas, memories that inspire, can trigger your creativity. A clean and well-organized workplace can also minimize distractions. Make a place where you can work in peace and not feel the outside world.

Control your mood.

If you are in a bad mood you cannot induce a feeling that makes your mind work better. Leave the bad mood out when you sit down to work. Set a good mood and everything else follows. There are many ways to set the mood. A little wine, soft music, and candles can work, but so can beer, heavy metal, and strobe lights. Or nothing at all.

Run away! Run away!

Go have fun! Having fun produces adrenaline that can make your imagination run wild. Take a walk, ride a bike, drive a sports car. Do what is not part of your daily routine and you will get out of the repetition rut. Before long your creativity will use the experience and shift into overdrive.
