Sometimes you may end up with a blank page at the end of a Word document. This will appear on the screen and will also print with nothing. This article takes you through the various methods to remove this. An extra blank page will only appear in Word and will print if there is anything on it, even if it is not visible. This is usually a new paragraph mark.

Probably the easiest method that works the same way for Word 2003 and 2007 is to click to the bottom of the page after all the text. Then just hit delete on the keyboard until the blank page disappears.

There is another method that allows you to see what is happening in the background. In Word 2007, go to the Home tab and paragraph section and then click the markup symbol at the top right which will show the page markup. In Word 2003, click View and Show All. This will show all paragraph markers that have created an additional page. Then just use the backspace key to delete or select all and hit delete on the keyboard or click cut.

There is a special case where the usual methods will not remove the extra page. If you have a table that takes up the entire last page of a Word document, it will create an extra paragraph that goes on an extra blank page that cannot be deleted. This is because the paragraph contains all the formatting details of the document. Although it cannot be deleted, this extra paragraph can effectively be made to disappear.

First click to display the markup page. Select the paragraph symbol on the blank page. Then in Word 2007 or 2003, in the font section, don’t use the dropdown for font size as it’s not small enough, but go back and type 1 so you end up with a small font size just for the format paragraph. The blank page should disappear.

If the page is not removed, another method is to hide it. Click again to display the markup. In Word 2007, in the Font section of the Home tab, click in the lower left corner to open the Font dialog box, and under Effects, click the Hidden box. In Word 2003, go to Format, then Font, and again click Hidden under Effects. When you click to hide the markup, the extra page will disappear. The page will show up as if it were there in Word in the lower left corner, but it won’t appear on the screen and it won’t print a blank page.
