What do you get when you combine the Japanese tanto with a Middle Eastern style Talwar? The cold steel black saber. Take a look at the single blade and you’ll find that Black Sable has the best of both worlds; the primary and secondary grind of a tanto with the curvature of a talwar.

I was lucky to get a great price on Black Sable and here are my honest opinions:

What I like about the knife:

1. Although the Black Sable is beautiful enough to be displayed or locked away, it is also extremely practical for everyday use. Its 4-inch blade makes it legal to take with you just about anywhere, and the stainless steel ambidextrous pocket clip makes it easy to carry in either the right or left hand.

2. Made with the hottest steel on the market today, VG-1 San Mai III, the Black Sable gives you a compromise between edge retention and flexibility.

With a VG-1 stainless steel inner core and 400 stainless steel outer layers, your Black Sable will shave sharp right out of the box and be much less prone to rust than a typical high carbon blade.

3. Cold Steel uses polished micarta for the pistol grip. The handle feels very smooth in the hand, but is still strong enough to handle the toughest situations.

4. When you open the knife, you will notice the clicking sound the Black Sable makes as it goes into the locked position. It becomes obvious that the lock is incredibly strong and has no movement (up and down or side to side).

5. To wrap a carefully crafted knife, the ferrules are made of titanium. This feature solidifies the Black Sable as a very reasonably priced custom style knife.

That I did not like:

1. I wish Cold Steel offered the same design at a lower price. Other than that, I have nothing negative to say about Black Sable.

In general:

Everything about the Cold Steel Black Sable is first class. The “Custom Series” steel, handle, bolsters, pocket clip and carrying case are built to last a lifetime. Get a Black Sable, you’ll be glad you did!
