Things you need:
-
small notebook
-
leather needle
-
Non-stick pressure foot
-
nylon upholstery thread
-
two sided tape
-
Glue
-
steel ruler
-
utility knife
-
fine leather
Step 1 – Cut the Required Pieces
You need to cut the piece of leather in two different sizes to make the cover of the notebook. You need the following parts:
-
2 pieces of pen tabs measuring 2″ x 1″
-
1 piece of 4″ x 2.25″ cardstock
-
2 flap pieces measuring 6″ x 3″
-
1 piece of 8.5″ x 6″ cover
Step 2: Remove the eyelashes from the pen
This process involves thinning a piece of leather to stack layers of leather on top of each other. Use your skiver to separate a thin layer from the back of each feather tab. Your goal should be to make the leather 50% thinner.
Step 3: Attach the card pocket
You can separate a small notch from the card pocket with your utility knife. Alternatively, you can use a round corner tool. This tool can be used to round the bottom two corners to your personal preferences.
Step 4: Notch the Fins
This step involves cutting notches out of the fins. All you need to do is use your utility knife to cut a 1/4″ deep notch. Next, you need to mark this point. You can use a hard object, like a nail or pin, to do this. During this process, each cut must be straight.
Step 5 – Prepare the Cover for Sewing
Now you need to apply some leather glue to the back of each hand. Give the glue a few minutes to dry. To make loops, you may want to double the tabs. You can also use a clip on the spot.
The next step is to place the flaps on the lid with the notches on the outside of the lid. You may want to mark the fin stop points.
Step 6 – Assemble Everything
The last step was to assemble everything. Once you have assembled everything, the book is ready to use. You can then insert your pen into the strong loops to keep the lid closed. For additional details, it is a great idea to make use of metal stamps.
In a nutshell, if you want to make a leather book cover, we suggest you follow the five steps explained in this article. This will make it much easier for you to go through the entire process. Hopefully, this do-it-yourself guide will help you through the whole process.
