Playing Protoss and losing match after match is very frustrating. I mean, they’re supposed to be the most advanced race in the galaxy, right? But did you ever think that your loss starts with StarCraft 2 Protoss opening strategy?

In fact, many players make the same mistakes when they start a match playing this race. Too many Zealots, too few probes, the gateway a few steps too late or in the wrong place, whatever. That is why I am going to tell you what is the best foundation for a solid StarCraft 2 Protoss strategy.

This is what every gamer should know:

1. The basic and most balanced opener for the Protoss race doesn’t leave you too many choices. Most players go with:

9 – Pylon
12-Gateway
13 – Assimilator
16 – Pylon

Of course, in the gaps between these main structures, you’ll need to deploy probes to increase your mining of ores and Vespane gas. Usually, if you skip one of these steps, you won’t have enough resources in the last few minutes of the game. In this way, the chances of failure will increase.

2. As you know, one of the advantages of the Protoss lies in their workers. A probe can set up a building, in a matter of 2-3 clicks, and then return to its previous activity. Usually after I set up Gateway, that particular probe becomes my main browser. Now, while I’m going to scout the enemy base, my entire StarCraft 2 protoss strategy may change at this point and turn into a quick photon cannon offensive. If the enemy didn’t block their base and I manage to sneak my probe in without them noticing, I can unleash my wrath from the perimeter of their base.

3. Especially if you play against Zerg, having 1-2 Zealots in 16 is a must. Also, if you’re up against the Zerg, blockade your base with your Gateway and a Pylon, leaving a 1 unit passage. Next, one of your Zealots must become your Guardian. Therefore, if your opponent sends out a quick Zergling dash, he won’t be able to attack your Zealot at once, and one by one, they will all die.

Now, as I said, this is the basic strategy of StarCraft 2 Protoss. By following these steps, you are one step in the direction of victory. You can’t go wrong with these, for the early phase of a match.

However, now you need to learn some advanced combat tactics, some APMs and micro-exercises, and master some mid and late build orders and strategies. After that, conquering the Diamond title will be a piece of cake.

So do you want to win almost every battle in SC 2?
