7 Tips for Selecting a Professional Plumbing Service Company.

1. Be sure to check that the plumbing company is licensed by the California State Licensing Board.

2. Understand that in the State of California the only person who must be licensed and certified to operate as a plumbing contractor is the owner or responsible managing employee. In short, don’t assume that the person who shows up at your door is a licensed plumber. It’s a very good idea to verify the “real plumber” by asking to see an official card or some personal references.

3. The California State Licensing Board only requires a $12,500 construction bond. Don’t assume that you and your home are protected by this bond. You should only hire plumbing companies that carry general liability insurance. Most policies cover more than $1 million in case something goes wrong with the job. You will want to make sure that your plumbing contractor is properly insured to cover any and all possibilities.

4. Workers’ compensation coverage. Society in general has become very quick to sue. If you hire a company that does not carry workers’ compensation insurance and an injury occurs on your property, you can be sued… Protect yourself by applying for and verifying that your plumbing contractor has comprehensive coverage.

5. Permissions. Are permits required? The simplest answer is “Yes.” A permit is required whenever you remove, alter, replace, or change things within your plumbing system. Always insist that permits be secured for larger projects. Not only is it the law, but you also get another layer of added protection; where the city or county will verify that the plumbing company is up to date with CSLB and some insurance requirements.

6. Never pay for work in advance. The California State Licensing Board is very clear that a contractor cannot charge more than 10% up to $1,000.00, whichever is less, for example, the most that can be charged upfront on a $5,000.00 project is $500.00

7. Before you pay for any work, you’ll want to make sure your plumbing contractor releases you from any hidden surprises in the form of an Unconditional Waiver and Release Form. This document is designed to ensure that you are not financially responsible to a questionable contractor. Without this form, material suppliers and workers alike can sue you; that you can prove that they supplied or worked on your project and were not adequately compensated.
