Fast Effective Relief works by neutralising excess gastric acid to relieve discomfort and pain in the stomach. It does this by affecting the activity of the enzyme systems of the stomach. Antacids neutralise excess acid in the stomach, thus reducing the amount of hydrochloric acid produced in the intestines. However, they can be very unpleasant to tolerate. Gaviscon contains an antacid, sodium bicarbonate, which is effective for dealing with excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach and relieving pain and uncomfortable symptoms. Excess sodium bicarbonate reduces the activity of the enzymes responsible for hydrochloric acid excretion. Thus, excess sodium bicarbonate excreted from the stomach combines with the excess water in the intestines and forms acetic acid, which stimulate painless bowel movements and reduce inflammation.
Gaviscon Double Action – Acidic Acid to Antacids
Diarrhea is a common symptom resulting from excess sodium in the blood and can be relieved by taking Gaviscon double action. It can be taken to prevent or reduce the frequency of diarrhea, and can be used with other medicines to alleviate pain, such as aspirin. However, pregnant women are not recommended to take this medication. Diarrhea can be treated with other medications including oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and intravenous fluids. Pregnancy must be carefully considered before taking gaviscon double action if it is being taken by pregnant women.
Longer lasting relief can be obtained by combining it with another drug called malic acid. Malic acid has long lasting effects on the stomach lining and is thus very effective for increasing the stomach’s capacity to absorb food, thereby reducing heartburn. Pregnant women may consider using this combination of medicines to treat their symptoms, since it has been shown to improve acid production in the stomach for heartburn. This combination is safe for use during pregnancy.
It is important to note that some patients may experience adverse side effects from both drugs. If you experience these symptoms, stop taking the medications immediately and contact your doctor. Some possible side effects include vision problems, drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty breathing, constipation, nausea, vomiting, fluid retention, numbness or tingling sensations, and itching or irritation in the stomach area or throat. Some patients also have a dry cough and hoarseness due to improper use of malic acid. Such symptoms may subside after stopping use of the drugs, but if they persist, you should contact your doctor to discuss alternate treatments for these symptoms.
