I often refer to “source” when talking to people, just like many other teachers in the area of personal development. I also mean connecting with the source and surrendering to the source.

As a result, I get frequently asked questions about what these phrases mean and how to connect to ‘source’. So here is the first in a series of articles on the subject.

Please remember that this is just my opinion. Everyone is free to have their own and I hope mine will help inform yours if you have questions on this topic.

What is the source?

To start with, let’s see what “source” is.

There are several dictionary definitions of the word ‘source’, including:

a place, person or thing from which something originates or can be obtained.

one that starts

one that provides information

the place where something comes from or begins, or the cause of something.

This makes sense to me. I use the term “source” instead of a denominational phrase like “god”, but I could also interchange it with “the divine” or “the universe.”

I am not aligned with a religious belief system, but I have faith in something greater, a divinity of some kind. I choose to call it “source”.

And the word makes sense because of its meaning in our language. I believe it is where life originates or can be obtained from, I believe it is the initiator of everything, one that provides information through divine guidance, intuition and inspiration. And it is where we come from, where everything begins and the cause of everything.

Where is the fountain?

However, I believe that the source is not external to us, that we can find the “source” within ourselves when we seek wisdom, guidance, growth, and more. I think that since we are part of ‘it’, ‘that’ is part of us.

I always remember talking about ‘source’ with a close family member many years ago, except that she called him ‘God’ at the time. The imagery he used really informed my belief system and it is something that I have challenged on a regular basis, but in the end I come back every time. It is like a great mass of light or energy, and a part separates from this great mass and becomes ‘you’ and goes on its journey through life, and then one day, it returns to this great mass of light or energy. Many years later, I read something similar in the books. Conversations with Godby Neale Donald Walsch, and it made perfect sense. It still does.

The important thing to remember is that while you are separate from the source, you always maintain a connection with it. It is as if a spark of that mass of light or energy resides within you and connects you to the “source” forever.

Our connection to the source

I think that’s the part, the spiritual essence, that you access when you work with your intuition, when you seek inner wisdom or divine guidance, and when you have an inspired thought. I believe that whatever spiritual development work you do develops this connection to the “source.” It allows you to remember your mission, your vision and your reason for being. I also believe that part of your reason for being is not only to experience being a real human being live, but also to remember that you are the source.
