Capital of Jamaica: Kingston
The city of Kingston is the largest city in Jamaica, thus earning the right to be the nation’s capital. It is located southeast of the coast of the island country. With a population of 651,800 as of the 2001 census, Kingston is the most dominant English-speaking city located in the southern United States of America. One can never experience the essence of Jamaica without going to the city of Kingston.
It is the heart of the island, which has the commercial, cultural and administrative essentials of the nation. Kingston also has one of the largest natural harbors in the world, ranking seventh internationally. The whole city has the sea to the south and the mountains to the north.
Kingston’s history is rich and is as interesting as the city itself. There was an earthquake that occurred during 1692 that damaged the capital Port Royal. The people who survived the natural tragedy moved to what is now known as Kingston and started a new city from there. The layout of the entire city is laid out in a grid pattern to this day, which in turn helps simplify locations throughout the city. During the year 1872, this city became the capital of Jamaica.
Today, Kingston is one of the busiest places in all of Jamaica, if not the busiest. Being the seat of government, Kingston has an international airport and other transportation needs to suit all kinds of needs. It also has a variety of restaurants, gift shops and galleries. Kingston, is truly a trademark of Jamaican history and culture.
