In many societies around the world that are seen as ‘civilized’, there are things that happen that make some people question this view. This includes how animals are typically treated, how people in power behave, and how people treat each other.

On top of this, the kind of things that are largely considered to be a normal part of society, are the things that occupy the palace from time to time. This includes how some people are treated when there is a demonstration and when there is a murder.

two ends

While this is happening, there are all the technological advances that are being made. You could say that they are things that are created mainly to make things easier for humanity and get them ahead.

In one area the focus will be on creating an even better smartphone, in another it will be on how to colonize another planet. Therefore, although there are many behaviors that can be seen as ‘uncivilized’, there are many behaviors that can be seen as ‘civilized’.

a perspective

Now it would be easy to say that most people in a society are civilized and only a few are not. If it weren’t for the few that cause most of the problems, then it would be a lot different.

This would mean that there are people who have left their most primitive side behind and people who have not. By overcoming this side of their nature, these people are able to act civilized.

another angle

This may seem black and white, with who is on one side of the spectrum and who is on the other, but this can be seen as a very superficial level assessment. For example, how common is it that a leader who seems evolved ends up being found guilty of behavior that is anything but evolved?

However, it is not even necessary to look at someone like that, as there are numerous examples at the local level where someone has engaged in behavior that goes against the image they had presented to the world.

a closer look

For example, someone could be a role model in the community and do all kinds of things to help others, and yet when they are at home, they could mistreat their children and their partner. The way you behave in one area of your life will then be radically different from how you behave in another.

But, without going that far, someone can create the impression of being an evolved human being in almost every area of their life and still have behaviors that have more in common with the way a child would behave. Therefore, they may find it difficult to control their impulses and get hooked on a number of things that are greatly undermining them.

Two levels

What this illustrates is that human beings are multifaceted and the way they present themselves is not always an accurate reflection of what is really happening to them. However, they are not only good at fooling others, they are also very good at fooling themselves.

If they were only made up of an instinctive and emotional self, this would probably not take place. However, since they also have an intellectual or mental self, this allows them, both consciously and unconsciously, not only to cover up what is really happening to them; it also allows them to lose contact with him entirely.

a great facade

Bearing this in mind, thanks to the ability someone will have to lose touch with what is really happening to them, it means that they can fool themselves and then others into believing that they are more evolved than they are. So one can behave in a certain way and have a well-developed intellect but, on an emotional level, one can be extremely underdeveloped.

On one level, they will evolve and play a role in creating a civilized society, but on another level, they will not evolve and the uncivilized parts of society will be a reflection of the uncivilized parts of their own being. However, because of what they have repressed and because their extroverted intellect will see what is happening ‘out there’ as separate from them, there will be no reason for them to see the connection.

The modus operandi

There will be the mental and emotional content that someone has repressed during their childhood and adulthood. Once something has been pushed out of your consciousness, you will have forgotten that you have forgotten it.

When it comes to what they repressed during their childhood, this may very much be the result of not having parents present. As to why this would occur during their adulthood, it may be because they have never developed the ability to self-soothe and live in a society that encourages this.

Two ways

Then one can automatically use or do things that will push their true feelings out of their consciousness or they can reach out for support and the same thing can happen. By working with a cognitive therapist, you can change what’s going on in your mind, while pushing your true feelings even deeper into your body.

Regardless of whether they avoid how they feel or someone else helps them to do so, the result will be the same; they will remain in an emotionally undeveloped state. Therefore, like many of their peers, they will be out of balance.

final thoughts

The problem is that if a society is mind-centered, the mind will be seen as the only part of the self that needs to be developed for the society to evolve. What is happening on an emotional level will not be recognized, much less dismissed.

Still, what is happening at this level for the citizenry will have a big effect on what does and does not happen. What this emphasizes is that it is not enough for only the intellectual part of one’s being to develop if what is desired is a civilized society and world.
